Psalm 119 — "Thy Word Is a Lamp unto My Feet"

Psalms 102–103; 110; 116–119; 127–128; 135–139; 146–150

The principle

As we study the word of God, He blesses us with guidance.

What the lesson is for

Help students make or renew a scripture study goal by seeing what the psalmist says the word of God actually did for him — guidance, joy, comfort, counsel, understanding.

Personal study, first ten minutes

Psalm 119:1–40 and 97–112

The psalmist names the word of God in nearly every verse — law, testimonies, precepts, statutes. What does he say it did for him? Mark every blessing you find.

Teacher notes

Supplies, board work and timing. Never printed on the cards.

SUPPLIES: a lamp or flashlight, and the ability to dim the room lights. Optional objects for the five groups: a hymnbook, coins, honey, a picture of a path, a picture of a counselor. OPEN by showing three or four of the student praise images from Friday's virtual lesson (209) and reading their sentences — lesson 209's note asks for this. Then dim the lights, turn on the lamp, and read Psalm 119:105. Cross-reference 119:105 to 2 Nephi 32:3. Goals made today get reported in Assess Your Learning 7, so keep them small enough to keep.

Journal prompt

The last five minutes. Card 3 hands into this.

Finish this sentence in your own words: as I study the word of God, He blesses me with ______. Then write your scripture study goal — how long, how often, and what you will do to invite the Lord's help — and write down where you will keep it so you see it every day.
