The principle

The Lord restored the gospel of Jesus Christ, including the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, to overcome the effects of the Great Apostasy.

What the lesson is for

Help students see that Isaiah described the Book of Mormon and the Restoration centuries early, and feel real gratitude for a book they can hold.

SUPPLIES: board or slides for the four clue phrases, revealed ONE AT A TIME — 'darkness shall cover the earth' (Isaiah 60:2), 'a famine of hearing the words of the Lord' (Amos 8:11), 'grievous wolves shall enter in among you' (Acts 20:29), 'a falling away' (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Hands up when they know it, but no one says it until all four are shown. Answer: the Great Apostasy. MULTIPLE FULFILMENT is the key Isaiah skill today and it is worth stating plainly: Isaiah 29 was first about Jerusalem's coming destruction AND also about the Apostasy and the Restoration (see 2 Nephi 27). Prophecy can mean more than one thing without any of them being wrong. ISAIAH 29:13–14 IS DOCTRINAL MASTERY — mark distinctively, give it the weight. 29:4 'whisper out of the dust' is the Book of Mormon; cross-reference 2 Nephi 33:13 and Mormon 8:23. 29:12 'him that is not learned' is Joseph Smith — JS—History 1:62–65 is the Anthon incident. HANDLE 29:13 GENTLY: honouring with lips while the heart is far off is a description that fits people in this room on some mornings, including me. Do not use it as a rebuke.
